Dubai has two airports and they're 60 km apart. Booking into the wrong one ruins your trip. Here's the difference.

DXB (Dubai International) is the main airport — 92M passengers/year, all major airlines, central location, metro-connected. DWC (Al Maktoum International) is a much smaller secondary airport 60 km southwest, used mostly by low-cost carriers (Wizz Air, some flydubai, charters) and cargo. They are NOT the same airport. Always check your ticket carefully.

• Terminals: 3 (T1, T2, T3)
• Airlines: Emirates (T3), flydubai (T2), all major international (T1)
• Annual passengers: 92 million (2024)
• Metro: Yes — Red Line, T1 and T3 stations
• Time to Downtown: 25-35 min (AED 8 metro / AED 80 taxi)

DWC — The Other One

• Code: DWC
• Full name: Al Maktoum International Airport
• Location: Jebel Ali, southwest Dubai (near Expo City and Dubai Parks)
• Terminals: 1 main passenger terminal
• Airlines: Wizz Air, some Air Arabia, some flydubai, charters, cargo
• Annual passengers: ~7 million (2024)
• Metro: No metro. Bus + taxi only.
• Time to Downtown: 50-75 min (AED 110-150 taxi, AED 25 bus + metro combo)

Why the Confusion

• Some search engines show "Dubai" as the city for both
• Booking sites sometimes hide the airport code
• Wizz Air, Norwegian, Pegasus often use DWC for cheaper flights
• Many people assume "Dubai = DXB" automatically

Booking a "cheap" Wizz Air flight into DWC and then paying AED 150 for a taxi cancels the savings.

Future Plans (2026)

Dubai is gradually transitioning major operations to DWC over the next 10+ years (Dubai Airports announcement 2024). For now, DXB remains the primary airport. Don't believe articles claiming DWC is "the new main airport" — it isn't yet.
