6 hours sounds like plenty until you factor in immigration, traffic, and re-check-in. Here's the honest plan that actually works.
With a 6-hour DXB layover you can leave the airport and see ONE thing — realistically Burj Khalifa exterior + Dubai Mall + fountain — and return in time. Budget: 1h immigration, 35 min taxi/metro each way, 2-2.5h sightseeing, 1h back at airport. You need a valid visa (or eligible visa-on-arrival nationality) to leave airside.
Six hours sounds like plenty. It isn't. Here's the honest math.
For the wider airport context see Dubai airport complete guide. For the visa side see Dubai airport transit visa no hotel.
You have a 2-2.5 hour window for actual sightseeing. Don't try to squeeze in the desert or Burj Khalifa observation deck (queues alone are 30-90 min).
Hour 0-1: Exit airport via T3, take metro Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall (AED 8, 25 min) or Careem (AED 60, 35 min).
Hour 1-3: Walk Burj Khalifa exterior + Dubai Mall + Souk Al Bahar bridge for fountain photos. If timing is right (6 PM, 6:30, 7, 7:30 PM), watch the fountain show.
Hour 3-4: Quick eat at Eataly or Shake Shack in Dubai Mall.
Hour 4-5: Careem/metro back to DXB. Allow extra for traffic 5-9 PM.
Hour 5-6: Re-check-in, security, gate.
You need either:
1. Visa-on-arrival eligibility for your passport — see Dubai visa-on-arrival countries
2. Pre-arranged e-visa or transit visa (AED 50-200) — see Dubai transit visa guide
3. Free Emirates Dubai Connect package (8h+ Emirates-Emirates connections only)
Without one of these, you cannot leave airside.
For longer layovers: Dubai airport sleeping pods. For shorter ones (under 4h), stay airside — see the pillar guide.
6h layover: leave airport, see Burj Khalifa exterior + Dubai Mall + fountain, eat, return. Don't try to do more.
