Dubai International (DXB) has 3 terminals (T1, T2, T3) — Emirates uses T3 exclusively, flydubai uses T2, all other airlines use T1. Immigration takes 15-45 min depending on time. The 3 Terminals — Who Uses What

Terminal 3 (T3): Emirates only. The biggest, newest, best — direct metro link, dnata lounges, fast immigration most hours.

Terminal 2 (T2): flydubai, Air Arabia, some Indian/Pakistani carriers. Smaller, older, on the opposite side of the airport (15 min drive from T3). NO direct metro — bus or taxi only.

Terminal 1 (T1): All other international airlines (BA, Lufthansa, Qatar, Etihad transit, etc.). Connected to T3 by an underground walkway and shared metro station.

⚠️ Critical: T2 is geographically separate. If you connect between Emirates (T3) and flydubai (T2), allow 3+ hours for the inter-terminal shuttle.

Immigration Times (2026 Reality)

Smart Gates: If your country participates (most EU, US, UK, Australia, GCC, India OCI), use the e-gate — 30 seconds. No stamp issued; entry is digital.

Layovers — The Hierarchy

Under 4 hours: Stay airside. Walk, eat, use a free shower in the prayer room area, or pay for a lounge.

8-24 hours connecting two Emirates flights: Claim Dubai Connect — free hotel, visa, transfers, meals. Most travelers don't know this exists. Book via emirates.com → Manage Booking.

• Under 8h, staying airside: No visa needed regardless of nationality.
• Over 8h or leaving the airport: 48h visa AED 50 or 96h visa AED 200. Apply via airline, not direct ICP.

Duty Free — What's Actually Worth Buying

DXB Duty Free is huge but not magically cheap. Real wins:

• Cigars and tobacco
• Local dates (Bateel, Kahak) — best gifts
• Saffron (Iranian, 50% cheaper than Western retailers)
• Gold and watches (premium pricing — only buy if you've checked elsewhere)

• Plaza Premium Lounge T1: AED 195, 3h. Good for non-Emirates flights.

What Most Blogs Won't Tell You

• DXB has no free overnight sleeping zones with full beds — Zen Garden has recliners but lights stay on.
• Wheelchair / mobility assistance is excellent and free — book through your airline 48h ahead.
• Pre-clear US Customs at DXB if flying to JFK/IAD/EWR/etc. on Emirates — no US immigration on arrival in America.
• A2A Connect is the lesser-known transit hotel inside T3 — sleep without leaving airside, AED 350-650 for 6-12h.
• The walking distances are huge. T1 to T3 = 25-min walk. Always allow extra time.
• Smart Gates are free — you don't need to pay for "fast track" if your passport qualifies.

Real 2026 Layover Itineraries

4-hour layover (airside): Eat at Marhaba Lounge or food court → 30-min nap at Zen Garden → duty free shopping → gate.

DXB is well-organized but big. Use the metro out of T1/T3, claim Dubai Connect if eligible, skip Duty Free unless buying liquor or dates. Don't try to sightsee on under-4h layovers.
